Joe Kubert (1916-2012) got his first job comics job as a teenager, quickly developed and was a professional comic book artist before he was out of his teens. He drew continuously until his death in 2012.
He worked for DC Comics for about 30 years, drawing Sgt. Rock of Easy Company. He worked on many war titles, and in 1972 began to beautifully adapt Edgar Rice Burroughs jungle hero, Tarzan of the Apes.
In 1976 he opened the Joe Kubert School, which has been producing professionals from the beginning. The school continues today.
Two of Kubert‘s children, Adam and Andy, became cartoonists, and at least three grandchildren have entered the comic industry, as well. If we count his students and his family, Joe has propelled a very large number of artists, writers and editors into the field in which he labored for 70 years. Quite a legacy!
Here are examples of his art. Joe Kubert was absolutely one of the best artists in any year he lived.
